This is a vintage hand-painted souvenir timber plate created by Aboriginal Enterprise Studios, which was founded by prominent Indigenous activist and entrepreneur Bill Onus.

 

The name "Wirrin" printed at the bottom is the brand name used on these collectable pieces. It is a word meaning "spirit" in the Noongar language.

These souvenir pieces were popularly handcrafted and sold across Australia between the 1950s and the 1980s.

 

 

Material: The base is made of a lightweight, polished wood or veneer.

 

Design: It features a signature silhouette style depiction of an Indigenous child spear-fishing at sunset, accented with native landscapes and birds in flight.

 

These timber plates are highly regarded by collectors of mid-century Australiana and vintage Indigenous arts.

 

 

It has a diameter of 14.9cm. 

 

The pattern is well-preserved. There is some minor loss of colour in spots and minor scratching.
