Vintage EPNS Cake Server
 

This EPNS cake server is simply divine.
 
An antique silver-plated cake or pie server, often called a pie spatula or pelle à tarte, featuring an etched floral blade and a wooden handle with a decorative metal ferrule.
 
Key Features
Blade: Silver-plated metal with an engraved floral and scroll design.
 
Handle: Dark wood with an ornate pierced metal bolster.
 
Style: Appears to be vintage or antique, reflecting turn-of-the-century European serving flatware styles. 
 
Why It Doesn't Have Markings
 
It is Silver-Plated, Not Solid Silver: While solid silver was heavily regulated and legally required to be stamped across Europe, silverplate laws were far more relaxed. Many manufacturers—especially in France, Belgium, and Germany—did not always stamp individual specialty items or serving pieces if they were sold as part of a larger unboxed set or intended as promotional gifts.
 
The Marks Polished Away: Antique silverplate marks were often stamped very shallowly into the soft base metals. Over a century of aggressive polishing can completely erase tiny surface stamps, particularly on thin areas like the neck or bolster.
 
How to Confirm Its European Identity Without Stamps
 
Despite the missing stamps, you can verify it as Continental European (most likely French) by focusing on the physical construction:
 
The Pierced Metal Ferrule: Look closely at the lace-like, openwork metal band connecting the blade to the wood handle. This style of decorative, cut-out bolster is a signature design element of late 19th-century French and Belgian serving flatware. British and American silver-plated servers from the same era almost universally used solid, unpierced smooth or ribbed bands.
 
The Engraving Style: The fluid lines, asymmetrical floral sprigs, and delicate scroll boundaries on the spade are quintessential French Art Nouveau styling from the 1890–1910 period.
 
The Blade's Shape: The distinctly elongated, angular shield shape with a tiny pointed tip is traditionally referred to in Europe as a pelle à gâteau or pelle à tarte (cake/tart shovel).
 
It measures 25cm in length and is 5.4cm at its widest point. The cake server surface is 9.5cm long. The handle is 15cm long.
 
It is in good antique condition. There is some looseness where the handle joins the server. I am going to see if that can be tightened up in the next few days. It has light surface wear and some mild tarnishing. The handle has some grooves and scratches. 
 
The photos show reflections. The server is silver in colour on the front and back.
