This image features a handmade patchwork quilt crafted from various plaid and tartan wool fabrics. This specific style, often referred to as a rag quilt or wagga, typically repurposes vintage wool blankets into new, unique household items like lap blankets or throws.

Key Features of the Quilt

  • Material: It is composed of multiple wool squares, featuring classic patterns such as tartan, tweed, and plaid.
  • Construction: The squares are joined together with visible hand-stitching or decorative crochet borders, a technique frequently used in vintage and "shabby chic" farmhouse decor.
  • Origin & Tradition: Throws like this are often crafted as "heirloom pieces" and are particularly common in artisanal traditions from regions like New Zealand, Scotland (using Harris Tweed), and Australia (the traditional "wagga" quilt).

  • While the fuzzy, matted texture of the wool squares can resemble needle felting, this appearance is actually the result of fulling (or "boiling") woven wool fabric, which causes the fibres to interlock and create a dense, felt-like finish.

  • Why it’s Patchwork (not Needle Felting)

  • Woven Origins: The individual squares show distinct tartan and plaid patterns characteristic of woven wool blankets.
  • Construction: The squares are clearly joined together using crochet or blanket stitching along the edges, a traditional method for assembling patchwork throws from recycled textiles.
  • Needle Felting vs. This: Needle felting typically involves using a barbed needle to sculpt loose wool roving into shapes or to "paint" designs onto a base fabric. This quilt uses pre-existing woven fabric pieces that have been cut and sewn together.
  • These quilts are often cherished as heirloom "memory blankets," repurposed from old family woollen blankets.

It measures 147cm x 74cm. The squares' measurements vary slightly but a general guide is around the 30cm x 37cm range.

It is handmade by another.

Please remember Australian Standards have changed over the decades since all these items were manufactured. These products may not meet current Australian Standards and are sold as a memory from the past.

A blanket in good vintage condition may have minor knicks, cuts and signs of general wear and tear. The photography colour may be slightly different to the item but all attempts are made to describe things to the best of human ability.
