A set of three vintage silver-plated serving utensils, consisting of a slotted fork-like piece (left), a pierced flat sifter or server (middle), and a shallow spoon or ladle (right), featuring slender cylindrical handles

1. Specific Functions and Names

These unique shapes show that this is a Victorian or Edwardian fruit and dessert serving set (often referred to as a berry serving set). During the 19th century, specialised flatware was created for highly specific courses.

  • Left Piece (Serving Fork / Prongs): Featuring a wide, shallow scalloped base with short prongs at the top, this is a fruit or cold meat serving fork. It was used to pierce and lift soft sliced fruits, pastries, or jellies without crushing them.
  • Middle Piece (Pierced Sifter): This is a sugar sifter ladle (or sugar caster spoon). The decorative circular drill-holes allowed powdered or granulated sugar to be dusted evenly over fresh berries, fruit tarts, or puddings at the table.
  • Right Piece (Scalloped Serving Spoon): This is a berry or fruit serving spoon. The broad, shallow, cloud-like scalloped edges were designed to scoop up soft berries, stewed fruits, or compotes along with their juices.

2. Historical Style, Age, and Material

  • Approximate Era: This set dates to the late Victorian or Edwardian era (circa 1880–1910).
  • Handle Style: The handles utilise a "ball-and-ring" turning style. This distinct architectural, machine-turned silhouette mimics the traditional baluster turnings found on 17th- and 18th-century brass candlesticks and fireplace fire tools.
  • Material: Based on the localized dark, dull grey-black tarnish (particularly noticeable along the handles and joints), these pieces are almost certainly silver plate (such as EPNS—Electroplated Nickel Silver). Silver-plated pieces over a base metal stem age with this exact type of deeper, uneven oxidation. (Plus they have EPNS stamped on at least one of them).

They measure 21.3cm - 22.6cm in length. They have a width of 7cm.

They polished up well. The photos show reflections. They are silver in colour.

Note - they are silver in colour. The photos have reflections in them.
