Preloved vintage Chinese silk embroidery panel, "Hundred Boys"motif, 100
Preloved This is a vintage Chinese silk embroidery panel featuring the traditional "Hundred Boys" (Baizitu, 百子图) motif.
Key Visual Features
Central Field: A cream-colored silk background intricately embroidered with numerous children playing, holding lanterns, and gathering in a garden landscape.
Brocade Border: Surrounded by a wide, patterned olive-green and gold brocade fabric border with a dark inner trim.
Cultural Symbolism: In traditional Chinese art, the "Hundred Children" theme represents fertility, great joy, and a wish for abundant, prosperous descendants.
It measures 62.5cm x 33.7cm. The stitched picture measures 49.7cm x 20.7cm.
It is unframed.
Age: Based on the synthetic-looking backing fabric, geometric brocade border, and the specific style of face stitching, this appears to be a mid-to-late 20th-century piece (circa 1950s–1970s).
It has some minor marks, loose threads and fading. One section at the base needs to be restitched. It has some pink discolouration from dye bleeding. The rear has staining.
Design and Details
The Motif: It shows many small children playing, gathering, and celebrating in different outdoor and indoor settings.
The Stitches: The colourful threads are stitched onto a light-coloured fabric background, surrounded by a decorative geometric border along the edges.
Layout: It is designed as a vertical rectangular hanging piece of traditional folk textile art.
