Preloved Vintage Japanese Ceramic Trinket Box
This vintage Art Deco lidded ceramic container resembles the vibrant hand-painted "Bizarre" ware produced by renowned English ceramic designer Clarice Cliff during the early 1930s, featuring an octagonal shape and bold fruit motifs.

It is very common for pieces like this to have no maker's marks on the base, which typically points to one of three historical possibilities:
1. 1930s Japanese Export Ware
During the Art Deco era, Japanese pottery factories (such as those producing Marutomo Ware or Yamakata pottery) created vast amounts of hand-painted "Bizarre-style" ceramics specifically for Western markets.
Many of these export pieces relied on paper or foil stickers that read "Made in Japan" rather than permanent underglaze stamps.
Over decades of washing and handling, these labels easily peel off, leaving the base completely blank.
2. Unmarked Clarice Cliff Blanks
While authentic Clarice Cliff pieces usually carry the famous backstamps, documentation from The Works of Clarice Cliff notes that during the 1930s, certain pieces occasionally skipped the stamping process entirely. Smaller items or pieces with narrow base areas often received incomplete stamps or were left completely blank. [1]
3. Art Pottery Hobbyist/Studio Work
The 1930s saw a massive boom in blank ceramic painting as a popular hobby. Talented amateurs would purchase plain white factory porcelain blanks and hand-paint popular commercial patterns—like this fruit motif—at home, choosing not to sign or mark their work.
It measures 10.5cm x 10cm, with a height of 9.2cm.
It is in good vintage condition. It has no chips or cracks. The pattern is in good condition with some minor loss of colour in spots.. Please study the photos. It has the scuff marks you would associate with a genuine vintage item.
